The word encaustic means "to heat" or "to burn." This medium consists of purifed beeswax melted with damar crystals and pigment. Heat is applied with every layer using a blowtorch. For storage, protect surface with glassine and a cushioning material. Prop painting against back edge; do not put pressure on the painted edge. Avoid extreme heat (direct sunlight) and cold, as well as immediate contact with the textured side of bubble wrap. Encaustic is a dynamic material, and will continue to bloom over time. Before exhibiting the work remove dust with a slightly damp, clean, soft, cotton cloth. Then gently buff with a dry clean, soft, cotton cloth to restore brilliance.
